Functional Safety

Making Functional Safety a Natural Part of Your Workflow

For example, an electric power steering system must not steer you into cross traffic, and a battery energy storage system must not explode due to a transistor failure or a software bug.

That’s why all potential root causes, whether random or systematic, must be considered during the development of such devices. The risk must be controlled and kept at an acceptably low level.

Functional Safety has been at the core of our services since 2010. We began in the automotive sector and have since expanded to include Li-Ion home energy storage systems and medical devices. This broad experience has made us well-versed in a wide range of functional safety standards and industries.

Our projects typically involve safety-critical systems in accordance with ISO 26262 ASIL D, ISO 13849 PL d, or IEC 61508 SIL 3. We are experienced in implementing these standards both in your projects and across your organization.

  • Continuously adjusting damping forces at each wheel based on road conditions and driving dynamics (e.g., PASM by Porsche),
  • Using air springs to adapt ride height and stiffness (e.g., Air Suspension by Daimler),
  • Actively counteracting body roll, pitch, and dive through hydraulic actuators (e.g., ABC by Daimler),
  • Enabling fast, seamless gear shifts with two separate clutches for odd and even gears (e.g., Double Clutch by Audi),

we have been deeply involved in the software development, functional safety engineering, and safety validation of these systems for many years.

Automotive Steering

Electric Power Steering (EPS) and Rear Axle Steering (RAS)

Since Electric Power Steering (EPS) replaced traditional hydraulic systems with an electric motor and an electronic control unit (ECU), several advantages have become evident:
  • Variable assist based on vehicle speed (more assist at low speed)
  • Active return-to-center functionality
  • Seamless integration with ADAS features (e.g., lane keeping)
  • Energy efficiency – power is only consumed during steering activity
In combination with Rear Axle Steering (RAS), vehicle maneuverability and stability are significantly enhanced:
  • Low Speed (< ~60 km/h): Rear wheels steer in the opposite direction of the front wheels, reducing the turning radius
  • High Speed (> ~60 km/h): Rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front wheels, improving lane change stability
Together, EPS and RAS contribute significantly to vehicle dynamics control and ADAS functionality, enabling features such as:
  • Lane keeping and lane centering
  • Automated parking
  • Emergency evasive maneuvers
EPS assists the driver’s steering input based on vehicle speed, steering angle, and torque. However, steering systems also pose safety-critical challenges. In the event of a failure, unintended steering—also known as „self-steering“—can lead to hazardous situations, such as collisions with cross traffic. We bring extensive experience in developing safe and reliable steering systems:
  • From the concept phase, including identification of critical driving maneuvers
  • Through system, hardware, and software development
  • To performance testing and safety validation on test tracks with a wide range of everyday drivers

The Battery Management System (BMS) in an electrical energy storage system is critical to ensuring safety, performance, and battery longevity. It continuously monitors and regulates key parameters such as:

  • Cell Temperature
  • State of Charge (SoC)

and protects from conditions that could lead to fire or explosion.
